GPA variant report for May

As I have written before, GPAnalysis is the best source of information on certified comic sales.  I highly recommend a subscription if for no other reason than getting the market reports.  One of the market reports is the price variant sales report.  This is the report for May 2012.

Defenders 35 (30 cent variant) joins the 1000 Dollar club

In the ComicLink November 2010 Featured Aution, another marvel price variant joined the $1000 club.  Defenders 35, graded, in CGC 9.8 with white pages sold for $1440.  This book is the single highest graded of the series ahead of one 9.6, two 9.4s, and five 9.2s.  I suspect that this beauty will end up in a registry set of one of the big Defenders collectors of which there are several.  Here is the ComicLink write-up and the scan of the book.

Price Comparison between 30 cent Variant Issues and Regular Issues

For buyers and sellers of high-grade certified comic books, I highly recommend a subcription to GPAnalysis.  GPAnalysis tracks and records the sales of CGC certified books and publishes them in an online-searchable database.  GPAnalysis also provides some useful monthly summary reports including a very useful report each month which details the sale of certified price variants.  (For the only comprehensive sales report that includes "raw" price variants, check this blog monthly.)  One of the interesting things that this report does is compare the sales price of variants to their regular edition issues.

Here are some high grade examples.

I have written several times about what might happen if a high-grade Spidey or X-Men price variant book ever showed up at auction.  Consider this recent book in the November 2010 ComicLink Feature Auction.

Yes, that is correct.  One of the eight current CGC 9.8 copies of Amazing Spider-Man issue 156 brought a hammer price of $650 in the auction.  In case you think that price is unusual, there was only one sale of a 9.8 issue 156 last year and it was for $550.  Highest graded Spider-Man issues are always in demand.  Figure this.  20 times $650 is $13,000 and 30 times $650 is $19,500.  I am not saying that if a 9.8 Spider-Man 156 30 cent price variant shows up at an auction that it will bring $13,000 to $19,500.  We may never know since one has not been graded yet (there are only two price variant 9.6s and two price variant 9.4s on the census.)  I never thought I would see a 9.6 Star Wars 1 price variant sell for over $25,000 either.  Interesting to think about, yes?

Be Very, Very, Very Careful - Ebay listing warning

In an earlier blog, I spelled out some keys to getting the prices for your variant books if you wish to list them on ebay.  Unfortunately, there are ebay sellers who are hitting paydirt by listing books as 35 cent variants when, in fact, they are not.

Ebay seller jordanbay listed this Daredevil 153 as a 35 cent variant.  There is just one major problem.  There is no 35 cent variant of this issue.  The listing quickly sold for $12 which must be a record for a mid-grade copy of this issue.  The 35 cent variant issues of Daredevil are 146, 147, and 148.

Ebay seller mmbuff listed these copies of Eternals 17 and 18 as 35 cent price variants.  They are not price variants.  They are regular issues, but the incorrect listing helped the books quickly sell at $14.99 each.  There are five 35 cent variant issues of the Eternals - 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

The moral of the story?  While it would certainly be a great deal to find a nice 35 cent variant for fifteen bucks or so, check to make sure that the issue is actually a variant before hitting the BIN.  Caveat Emptor...

July and August 2010 Variant Sales

Avengers 147

After a two issue detour, Avengers returns to the Squadron Supreme Saga in Issue 147.  The story picks up with both teams transported to the Squadron's world.  The two teams face off and Patsy Walker who found the discarded costume of the Cat faces off with Hyperion.  The Vision takes on Lady Lark.  The Golden Archer ends up with Captain America.  The Scarlet Witch faces Dr. Spectrum and we have a battle royal. 

Vision notices that while they are fighting, Army helicopters, tanks and troops surround them.  They are back on the alternative Earth and the out of the last chopper comes President Nelson Rockefeller wearing the Serpent Crown on his head.  The Serpent Crown contains an ancient evil intelligence.  The Vision decides it is best to disappear and then he reappears to snatch the crown off the head of the President and toss it to the Scarlet Witch.

We then learn that the Secret of the Serpent Crown. "It and its twin on our Earth, and all the others scattered throughout the myriad realms of reality - are all mere infestations of a single serpentine nethermind, older than antiquity!  The are numberless, and they are one - and each and every human being who places one on his head becomes its slave for forever, in contact with all the others."  President Rockefeller contacts Hugh Jones who wore the crown on our Earth.  In the meantime, the Avengers are hiding out on the alternative world and the Scarlet Witch somehow has been exploring the crown without wearing it and discovers that all the heads of the major conglomerates on the alternative Earth have worn the helmet.  The effort exhausts her and she collapses.

Next we meet Thor, Hawkeye, Moondragon and Two-Gun Kid who has time-traveled 100 years to meet the Avengers in the Arizona desert.  I am not sure if they were legal or illegal aliens, but it is 1976, so it doesn't matter.  Hawkeye leaves the Avengers (to be seen again with Two-Gun Kid in Marvel Spotlight) to go with Two-Gun to hunt wild broncos.

The story returns to the alternative world where the Scarlet Witch has been taken over by the Serpent Crown and attacks her husband, the Vision.  The Vision chases after her after she decides to return the crown to the President.  The Scarlet Witch runs into the Squadron Supreme and is grabbed by Hyperion.  The Vision yells "Unhand her, Hyperion - Now!!"  Hyperion refuses and the Vision starts to kick some Squadron Supreme tail.   First he BWAMs Hyperion.  Then the Golden Archer shoots a Detonation Arrow at Vision which passes through him.  Then Lady Lark tries her Larksong but the Vision blasts her with solar energy forn his eyes which must have singed a few feathers.  The Golden Archer fires a Ultra Sonic Siren Arrow at the Vision and Hyperion "Crumps" him with a light pole.  Meanwhile, unnoticed, the Scarlet Witch is doing battle with the Crown.  Finally, the Vision takes out Hyperion and just when Lady Lark is about to take out Vision, Lady Lark is silenced by the ... Scarlet Witch.  Apparently the Scarlet Witch's mutant soul was able to overcome the horrible mental onslaught of the Serpent Crown or maybe it was her love for the Vision. 

Anyway, the Vision takes the Crown thinking that it won't be able to attack his Computer Mind and if he is mistaken, he too will be saved by love.  If I am Nelson Rockefeller, I think I would be a little upset that I didn't have enough love to overcome the power of the Serpent Crown.

CGC has only certified nine copies of this price variant issue.  The condition census is one 9.4, three 9.0s and two 8.5s.  The last 9.0 sold in August of 2008 for $150.

Comiclink is one if not the most important sales venues for high-grade bronze-age comics. Comiclink does not report its sales to GPAnalysis. Variant Prizes Realized

Good price data is hard to find on Marvel Price Variants. The Overstreet Price Guide doesn't really have a clue about these books. I track most of the auction results and will post the results of auctions in an effort to help collectors value their collections. Harry Miller, one of the godfathers of the variant mafia regularly tracked ebay sales results of price variants and posted them to this site. Unfortunately, the site crashed in 2009 and the back up was only successful up to 2008. Harry did not resume posting the auction results. The buyer of books 36 through 52 (with the exception of 41) is going to be disappointed in the books as, in my opinion, the seller is a serial overgrader.

It also appears that three really nice 30 cent variant books from a very reputable ebay seller who inherited a phenomenal 30 cent variant collection (but that is a story for another blog) were taken down off ebay and sold in a private transaction. The books were

And finally,

Skull the Slayer 7 in CGC 9.4 W for $83. Here is how the seller described the book. "This listing is for one CGC slab, as described in the title of this listing. This is the rare 30 cent price variant cover. For some reason CGC did not mark it as a variant cover, but this is the rare variant version. This issue has a very tough black cover. It is very hard to find the regular issue in high grade, let alone the variant cover. Plus this copy has amazing WHITE pages and a perfectly centered cover." The only problem is that CGC did not mark it as a variant because Skull the Slayer 7 is NOT a variant edition.
