GPA Price Variant Report for May 2015 shows Record sale of a Thor Price Variant $3000

Many of you know that I highly recommend GPAnalysis (GPA) to serious variant collectors.  GPA keeps track of almost all publicly traded sales of certified comic books.  If you buy or sell certified comic books you owe it to yourself to get a subscription.  The subscription is reasonably priced.

One of the things I like best about GPA is that it has several Market Reports.  The GPA-Price Variant Report is one of these reports.  Below is a copy of the May edition.  GPA is reporting that a 9.8 copy of a Thor 260 35 cent price variant sold for $3000.  This is a new record for Thor Price variant and is also indicative of the current market for single-highest graded 35 cent price variants.  There are only 13 certified copies of this issue in any grade.  The condition census is one 9.8, one 9.4 and three 9.2s.

Important variant sales last month also include near record sales of Star Wars 1, X-Men 99, and a $250 sales of a mid-grade Logan's Run 6 (a very cool book).

A couple of nice Amazing Adventures 37s sell on the "bay"

Ebay seller Topnotchcomics auctioned off a couple of nice certified Amazing Adventures 37 price variants on ebay.  On December 1, he sold this spectacular CGC 9.6 copy of the issue.  It brought $218.  It is one of three highest graded 9.6s on the census.  Perfectly centered, full star burst, and white pages... they don't come nicer than this one.

Later in December, he sold this very nice CGC 9.4 graded copy of the same issue with almost the same results - $200.  Fittingly so, since from the pictures, it is hard to tell a difference between the two books.

Warlock sales break record, highest graded.

The three Warlock 30 cent price variants are some of the rarer price variants.  Two very nice price copies of Warlock 13 have sold in the past couple of months.  The first is this single highest-graded CGC 9.8 blazer which brought $795 as a Buy It Now on ebay.  It is one of only two 9.8s on the census.

A 9.6 of the same issue sold for $200.  There are eight 9.6s on the census.  You will note that this is an October sale and the above 9.8 is a December sale.  These are definately two different books, not the same book just resubmitted to CGC.

One of the six highest graded Warlocks of Issue 12 was also sold on ebay for $200.  9.6 is the highest grade for this issue.  There are no 9.8s.

Conan 65 in CGC 9.8 (highest graded) sets record

A very nice CGC 9.8 example of Conan 65 recently sold on ComicLink for an issue-record $825.  The last high-grade example of this issue was a CGC 9.6 that sold in May 2012 for $185.  As a comparison, a very nice pedigree example of the regular issue Suchsa News 9.8 sold for $216.

Iron Man 88 in CGC 9.6 White sets record

One of only three NM or better copies of the 30 cent variant issue of Iron Man 88 and the single highest graded at 9.6 White set a new price record of $450 for the issue in the May Comiclink Featured Auction.  This price is 40 times higher than the last sale of similarly graded regular copy of this issue.  The brilliant blue background on the cover of this issue always makes this issue tough in grade.  The slight stress at the top staple is all that appears to keep this issue from grading higher.

Incredible Hulk 199 joins Incredible Hulk 200 as a four figure book.

The final 30 cent price variant auctioned in the November 2010 ComicLink auction was a stunning 9.8 white paged copy of Incredible Hulk 199.  When the dust cleared, the book brought $1433.  The only other 9.8 30 cent Hulk sold was Issue 200 in a Heritage auction in April 2009 for an almost identical $1434.  This book is the single highest graded copy of the issue followed by two 9.6s and three 9.4s.  It is a rare event when a 9.8 30 cent price variant comes up for sale, and this auction proves the tremendous interest in these books.

Defenders 35 (30 cent variant) joins the 1000 Dollar club

In the ComicLink November 2010 Featured Aution, another marvel price variant joined the $1000 club.  Defenders 35, graded, in CGC 9.8 with white pages sold for $1440.  This book is the single highest graded of the series ahead of one 9.6, two 9.4s, and five 9.2s.  I suspect that this beauty will end up in a registry set of one of the big Defenders collectors of which there are several.  Here is the ComicLink write-up and the scan of the book.

High-Grade Amazing Spider-Man 35 centers - Updated Price Information

There is nothing like a well-followed auction with fresh, never-seen material to check the real price levels on great 35 cent variant books.  Long-time variant collector Darthdiesel auctioned off several top-census 35 cent books on ebay recently, including two very high grade Amazing Spider-Man 35 cent books.

Spider-Man 173 in CGC 8.5 Off-White to White (tied for highest graded, and only six books on the census) brought a hammer price of $612.  Eight bidders were recorded with fifteen bids and three bidders registered bids in excess of $500.  There was definately at least one additional bidder as I really wanted that book (my copy is a 4.5) but didn't snipe high enough and my bid was never entered.  I suspect that there were other bidders/snipers as well.  This result is now the only recorded sale of this issue in GPA.  By the way, assuming that you could sell a CGC 8.5 regular issue 173 for the cost of the slab, this price is forty times the price of the regular issue.

The other high grade Spidey 35 center that Darth auctioned was a beautiful CGC 9.2 Off-White to White 171.  This auction registered five bidders and 10 bids before the Buy It Now option was utilized for $800.  Since the 8.5 173 went for over $600, this might have been a smart move, but until another comes up for auction, we will never know.  The problem is that currently there is just one additional 9.2 and a lone 9.6 that are locked up in collections, so it may be awhile before we find out.  The BIN price of $800 is about twenty-five times the price of a regular issue CGC 9.2 171.  Twenty-five times the price of of a regular issue 9.6 would value the CGC 9.6 35 center at over $2000.

Iron Fist 14 in CGC 9.2 brings $4625

One of only three Iron Fist 14 certified by CGC in 9.2 was sold by ComicLink for $4625 in an exchange (as opposed to auction) transaction.  This is truly an important book and there is still only one book graded higher at 9.4.  The last sale of a 9.2 was in October of 2008 for $4100.  Regular issue 9.2s of this issue sell for about $250 or 1/20th of the price variant amount.  Here is an interesting back of the napkin calculation - regular issue 9.8s sell for around $2000 so if a 9.8 Iron Fist 14 price variant issue is ever found would it go for $40,000.  What do you think?

Two four-figure sales of Iron Fist books in one month begs the question of which price variant issues have broken four figures.  There will be others but only if and when the books are ever found and if and when they come up for auction, particularly high-grade mainline titles like Spidey and X-Men and the exceptionally rare war, western, horror and Hanna Barbara books.  Here is the list of the ones I know of including some near four figure books.  This is a list you won't find anywhere else.  If you know of another transaction that I need to add to the list, please let me know.

Amazing Spider-Man 157

Amazing Spider-Man 157 is the easiest of the Amazing Spider-Man Bronze-Age Price Variants to find in high-grade. Of course, using "easiest to find" and Bronze-age Price Variant in the same sentence is oxymoronic. CGC has certified 42 copies of this issue which is more than twice as many as issue 156. Five copies are currently tied for the highest grade at 9.6 with 12 more in 9.4, and six in 9.2. The last high grade copy to sell was a CGC 9.4 that sold in March 2010 for $675.

Issue 157 continues some of the sub-plots from the previous issues and begins a three issue story-arc. In fact, this issue finishes with Spidey plunging from a helicopter a mile in the air after Doc Ock clips his webbing. The issue begins with
Spider-Man diving into the Hudson River to try and recover his Spider-Mobile, a continuing story plot that begins in issue 126. Spidey orginally thought he would get rich with a license deal from Corona motors (great name, but drinking and driving don't mix) but now is worried about getting sued instead. Spidey only finds the side-view mirror and realizes the car is gone. Returning to the surface he has to elude two cops and then he returns home.

Peter arrives at Aunt May's house with a tub of chicken and is shocked that Aunt May has helped Dr. Octopus with a shower and some new clothes. Doc Ock tells them how he survived the explosion on a nuclear reactor on an island that Aunt May owned but is now haunted by the ghost of Hammerhead who set off the explosion. This apparently is the cue for the ghost of Hammerhead to appear, causing Aunt May to faint and Doc Oct to flee with her in his arms. Peter becomes Spider-man and chases them. Doc Ock uses a crowd of people encouraged by a bounty from the Bugle to capture Spidey to elude Spidey and escape to a helicopter. Spider-Man snags the helicopter with his webs, but when Doc Ock notices that Spidey is hitching a ride on the helicopter, he snips the webs and we will have to wait until issue 158 to find out what happens to Spidey.

Amazing Spider-Man 156

The second of the five Amazing Spider-Man 30 cent price variants is issue 156.

Returning to his apartment early in the morning from his battle with the WHO computer (issue 155), Spider-Man is trying to catch some sleep before he has to be at Ned Leeds and Betty Brant's wedding. As he lands on the roof of his building, he is attacked with a broom by his landlady Mrs. Muggins, who suspects the intruder is a pervert.

Mary Jane ties his bow tie and the two arrive at the beginning of the marriage service of Ned and Betty. Then the wedding is crashed, not by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, but by a villain named Mirage who has the power to appear several places at once. Mirage is there to rob all the guests (pun- I am called Mirage, and I've come to rob you blind.) but Peter finds a way to change into Spider-man and defeat Mirage by crashing a chandelier into the wedding crasher. Spider-Man finds a way to change back to Peter Parker and explain his disappearance and the priest concludes the marriage of Ned and Betty.

Aunt May catches the Betty's bouquet and returns to her apartment where she finds a Bowery Derelict waiting for her inside. The bum exposes himself to her and surprise, it is Dr. Octopus, whom she almost married back in issue 131. Otto Octavius asks her for help and the issue ends.

CGC has certified only 18 price variant copies of this issue. The highest grades on the CGC census are one 9.6, two 9.4s, and six 9.2s. This issue is extremely tough and price information, particularly for high-grade copies is practically non-existant. GPA records only one sale of a 9.4 graded copy and that was back in October of 2004 for $173. That book would sell for much more today. GPA does not have a record of a VF or higher book selling in the last three years.

Invaders 6 Highest Graded

This Invaders 6 30 cent price variant just brought a $300 hammer price in the recently ended Pedigree Comics Grand Auction. This book is the single highest-graded of the issue followed by two 9.4s and three 9.2s. There is more sales history on this issue and in particular this book than almost any other 30 cent variant

This book first sold in October 2006 for $229. It sold again in January of 2009 for $250 and now again for $300.

The last CGC certified 9.4 of this issue sold in 2005 for $200.

Long live the KING!

In ComicLink's November 2009 auction, a sizzling copy of Star Wars 1 achieved the record price for a Marvel Price variant. The auction for the CGC 9.6 white paged copy ended at $26,250.


The Star Wars 1 price variant holds a unique place for Star Wars collectors. The comic book is the only Star Wars collectible that was released prior to the release of the movie. Marvel Comics Group was struggling financially as evidenced by the need to try a price increase and the tremendous popularity of the movie and the tremendous sales of the Star Wars comics books helped save Marvel from financial ruin.

Currently, there have been 81 unrestored Star Wars 1 books graded by CGC. This 9.6 book is the single highest graded followed by two 9.4s and six 9.2s. Compare this to the 1735 regular issues that have been graded by CGC with 104 9.8s and 458 9.6s and 439 9.4s and you get an idea of the rarity of the marvel price variants. A regular edition of Star Wars 1 in 9.6 would typically sell for around $130 or half of a percent of the variant edition. Because of the huge print runs for the Star Wars 1 book, the Star Wars 1 price variant is the most common of all the price variants books and because of the popularity of the Star Wars franchise, one of the most desired.
