March ComicLink Auction - A Slew of Highest Graded 35 Cent Price Variants Auctioned

It is always a pleasure to see an auction when a highest graded price variant comes up for auction.  Even more so when it is a highest graded 35 cent price variant.  And even more so when one auction has several of these books for sale in one night.

Notable ComicLink Sales

Ever since Fred McSurley listed his hoard of 35 cent price variants on ComicLink a few years ago, the ComicLink marketplace has cornered the market for high grade marketplace (not auction) price variant listings.  ComicLink sales (marketplace or auction) do not get reported to GPA.  Since ComicLink has several notable sales in the small niche of price variants, I thought it would help to note some of the more important recent sales of price variant books.

ASTONISHING TALES #35

Section: For Sale / Golden, Silver and Bronze Age Comic Books / Marvel, Timely and Atlas / ASTONISHING TALES Price: $210 Publisher: Marvel Condition: CGC 9.6 NM+ Census Rank: Highest CGC Graded! Page Quality: White Pages Type of Holder: Universal Degree Of Restoration: Unrestored Pedigree or Highlight: PRICE VARIANT ComicLink Comments: This impressive 30 Cent Price Variant has graded at CGC's upper Near Mint 9.6 tier, the highest grade ever assigned to an example of this issue. This stunning example is 1 of only 2 to reach this lofty tier. Elevating this one to the top of the very short list of 9.6s, CGC has assigned its perfect page quality designation of White pages, making this the very best 9.6 attainable. High grade 30 Cent Price Variants are extremely elusive on the market. In fact, many collectors have no choice but to settle for a lower grade example to complete their collection. It is not often that a top graded example presents itself at auction with this level of preservation. With its rarity in grade these 30 Cent variants are sure to reach a new level of popularity and demand. The black cover makes it the hardest to find in grade as well. Only two 9.0s are nicer than this book. IRON MAN #85 Section: For Sale / Golden, Silver and Bronze Age Comic Books / Marvel, Timely and Atlas / IRON MAN Price: $130 Publisher: Marvel Genre: SuperHero Condition: CGC 9.2 NM- Census Rank: 3rd Highest CGC Graded Page Quality: White Pages Type of Holder: Universal Degree Of Restoration: Unrestored Pedigree or Highlight: PRICE VARIANT Seller's Grading Comments: Simply a gorgeous copy of this hard-to-find Marvel Bronze-Age price variant. What does $15,000 get you? Hint. A real nice Star Wars price variant set

Ebay seller cgc_and_more listed a complete high grade Star Wars price variant set on ebay for $17,999.95.  The seller accepted a bid of $15,000 for the high grade set which included issue number 1 in 9.4 White, issue number 2 in 9.4 White (highest graded), issue number 3 in 9.2 Off-White to White, and issue number 4 in 9.4 White.  I figure $7000 for issue 1 and $3000 each for issues 2 and 4 and $2000 for issue 3 makes this a good deal for the seller and the buyer.  I am not sure that you will ever see another listing like this.  Ever.

GPAnalysis.com has a great Price-Variant Sales report

I have mentioned GPAnalysis (GPA) in several of my blogs.  I heartily recommend it for any serious comic collector/investor/speculator/dealer.  One of the best things about GPA is that it produces a Price-Variant Sales report each month.  The report details every certified sale of a price variant and also compares the sales price to the regular issue.  Here is a copy of the current issue.

I get asked often what is the normal price difference for price variants.  Note that this report is typical for certified examples and the multiple for 30 cent variants is typically 10 to 20 times their regular issue brethren.  35 centers can be even higher.

I would also mention the $1455 price for the Star Wars 1 price variant and that John Carter price variants seem to be getting some love because of the Disney movie.

Important Star Wars 1 in 9.4 White ComicLink auction

The second high-grade book 35 cent variant in the March ComicLink auction was this stunning Star Wars 1 35 cent price variant.  Undoubtedly a QueenAngelica book, this is one of only seven 9.4s graded with only two 9.6s graded higher.   The QueenAngelica mini-hoard brought several high-grade copies of this ultimate bronze-age comic which temporarily sated the incredible demand for this book.  Now demand again seems to be rising for this issue.

Here are the auction details.

STAR WARS #1 - The Auction Has Ended  Item description: 1977, 1st Star Wars adaptation Publisher: Marvel Condition: CGC 9.4 NM Page Quality: White Pages Type of Holder: Universal Degree Of Restoration: Unrestored Census Rank: 2nd Highest CGC Graded Pedigree or Highlight: PRICE VARIANT Current Bid: $7,300 Number Of Bids: 41  Final Bid: $7,300 End Date: 3/7/2012 10:43:00 PM ComicLink Comments: Very few Bronze Age comics can match the scarcity of the 35 cent Price Variant of the first issue of Star Wars, and the combination of this iconic series with the comic book format underscores the cultural relevancy of both. The offered example is 1 of only 7 at the CGC 9.4 NM tier and is the second highest grade ever assigned by CGC with just two examples graded slightly higher in 9.6. Elevating this one to the very top of the short 9.4 list, CGC has assigned its perfect page quality designation of White Pages.

High-Grade Iron Fist 14 sale on ComicLink

There were two great high-grade Marvel 35 cent price variants featured in the March 2012 ComicLink Auction.  The first was a stunning copy of Iron Fist 14.  Graded by CGC as 9.2 Off-White to White, it is one of four 9.2s with only two 9.4s graded higher.  This is only the third recorded sale by GPA of a 9.2 since 2002.  Here are the details on the book and the auction.

IRON FIST #14 - The Auction Has Ended  Item description: 1977, 1st Sabretooth appearance Publisher: Marvel Condition: CGC 9.2 NM- Page Quality: Off-White to White Pages Type of Holder: Universal Degree Of Restoration: Unrestored Census Rank: 2nd Highest CGC Graded Pedigree or Highlight: PRICE VARIANT Current Bid: $3,650 Number Of Bids: 28  Final Bid: $3,650 End Date: 3/7/2012 9:01:00 PM ComicLink Comments: The 35 cent Price Variant for Iron Fist 14 is very rare in high grade. This NM CGC 9.2 is the second highest graded, and only 4 have ever been awarded this grade, with a mere 2 at 9.4 ever certifying slightly higher. Demand is very strong for this first Sabre-Tooth appearance, and in combination with both Price Variant and high grade, this item makes for a very unusual opportunity.High grade 35 Cent Price Variants are extremely elusive on the market. In fact, many collectors have no choice but to settle for a lower grade example to complete their collection. It is not often that top graded examples present themselves at auction. With their rarity in grade these 35 Cent variants are sure to reach a new level of popularity and demand.

Daredevil 136 joins the four-figure club

The October ComicLink auction featured some exceptionally nice 30 cent variants.  The highlight of the auction was the single highest graded Daredevil 136 which bought $1227 after spirited bidding (35 bids).

This was the finest grouping of 30 cent variants to come up in  a long time.  I think the auction was kind of hit and miss in regards to pricing as some of the books, like the spidey variants, went for bargain prices, while others did very well.  The auction was competing with the World Series and football.  Here are the other variant highlights.

Another Iron Fist 14 35-Cent variant sale of note.

CGC boardie Keldog sent me a note about a recent sale of a nice Iron Fist 14 35-cent variant on ComicConnect.  This book sold for $2850 after receiving 13 bids.
